Teaching elderly patients to get on and off the floor

This protocol does not override the individual responsibility of health professionals to make appropriate decision according to the circumstances of the individual patient in consultation with the patient and /or carer.  Health care professionals must be prepared to justify any deviation from this guidance.

Pathway Information

Introduction

This aim of this pathway is to teach elderly patients a safe procedure for getting on / off the floor and to reduce the consequences of a ‘long –lie’ for patients unable to get off the floor.

The patients covered by this pathway are elderly patients involved in rehabilitation, who have fallen or who are at risk of falling.

This pathway is to be used by the following staff groups:

All qualified physiotherapy staff involved in rehabilitation of elderly patients.

At least two members of staff should be present including one physiotherapist experienced in teaching on/off floor using the reverse chain method.
