Stroke positioning

This guidance does not override the individual responsibility of health professionals to make appropriate decision according to the circumstances of the individual patient in consultation with the patient and /or carer.  Health care professionals must be prepared to justify any deviation from this guidance.

Pathway Information

Introduction

This pathway has been developed to advise all healthcare professionals, involved in the care and rehabilitation of people who have suffered from a stroke. This advises staff how to position people suffering from a stroke in lying and Sitting to facilitate optimal recovery of posture and movement.

This pathway is for use by the following staff groups:

  • Nursing staff (both qualified and unqualified)
  • Therapy staff (both qualified and unqualified)

 

Competencies required

All staff involved in the care of stroke patients.

  • All trained Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapy staff
  • Physiotherapy assistants
  • Physiotherapy students (under supervision).
  • Nursing staff (all grades)
  • Health Care Assistants

The pathways has been developed so it is as self-explanatory as possible.
